Symbolism, Imagery, Allegory
When Wisty visits the City of Progress, she's overwhelmed by the New Order's propaganda campaign. She sees some sort of advertisement for the government everywhere she turns. "The One Who Is The One was, quite literally, everywhere—on posters, paintings, videos, front pages of newspapers, murals" (69.1), she tells us. The government's slogans are out in full force as well:
We saw signs of the new regime everywhere: bumper stickers on the bright, shiny SUVs and minivans saying things like SAY YES TO THE N.O. and IF YOU SEE SOMETHING, SAY SOMETHING. (69.4)
Subtle, right? Yeah, not so much. But The One and the New Order government aren't about subtlety—they're about control. They're here to dominate society, and the abundance of images and slogans makes this crystal-clear.
