  • Consuela Comacho is born around 1940 to a Mexican-American family.
  • She is determined not to be a traditional mother like her mom, and goes to college.
  • She becomes pregnant by a boy named Chuck, who refuses to help care for the baby.
  • She gets an abortion, and falls in love with Martín.
  • Martín is killed in a knife fight soon after.
  • Consuela marries Eddie Ramos. They have a daughter, Angelina.
  • Eddie cheats on Consuela and beats her. They split up.
  • Consuela has to work as a single mother; she has little time to see her daughter.
  • Consuela meets Claud, a blind, black saxophone player and pickpocket. They are very happy together.
  • Claud is arrested; in jail he is experimented on with a herpes injection, and dies.
  • Consuela enters a deep depression, during which she hits Angelina and breaks her wrist.
  • Consuela is committed to an institution for insanity and loses custody of her daughter, who is placed in foster care.
