• Auggie establishes immediately that he feels normal inside, but doesn't look normal outside.
• Auggie's parents convince him to try school.
• When he tours the school, Auggie meets three kids who have been asked by the principal to befriend him.
• Auggie starts fifth grade at Beecher Prep.
• Auggie suffers through all the kids staring at him, and is surprised when a girl named Summer sits with him at lunch the first day.
• Auggie and Summer become friends.
• Auggie and Jack become friends.
• Auggie figures out that no one at school dares touch him or have any contact with him, as if he were the moldy cheese from Diary of a Wimpy Kid.
• Auggie chooses a different costume than the one he originally planned to wear on Halloween, and has a great time walking around school unnoticed—until his alternate mask allows him to overhear Jack and Julian saying really mean things about his appearance.
• Auggie flees the scene, goes home "sick," and decides he's done with school.
• Auggie's sister talks him into going back to school.
• Auggie quits talking to Jack and tries to dismiss Summer from pretending to be his friend, but she doesn't let him.
• Auggie forgives Jack when he apologizes, and they become friends again.
• When the kids return from winter break, Auggie and Summer are the only kids who will talk to Jack (thanks to Julian).
• Auggie and Jack and Summer continue being friends and doing their best to ignore the rude notes and bullying that Jack suffers—Auggie notices the kids in class getting kind of tired of Julian's war against Jack.
• Auggie is really worried when he has to gets hearing aids, but they help his hearing a ton, and everyone is cool about them.
• Auggie cracks a joke about his face with one of the girls in his class, who suddenly realizes how funny and sweet he is.
• Auggie is really mad when he realizes that Via doesn't want him to be seen at her school.
• When he goes to see Via's play and she gets a standing ovation, he decides that everyone should get a standing ovation at least once in a lifetime.
• Auggie is ecstatic when he finds out Julian isn't going on the fifth grade nature retreat; Auggie has a blast at camp.
• On the last night of camp, Auggie and Jack head into the woods for a nature pee and have an ugly run-in with some mean seventh graders from another school.
• Auggie and Jack are saved by Amos, Miles, and Henry, who circle back to check on their classmates.
• In the fight and subsequent flight, Auggie's hearing aids are lost.
• Auggie is banged up, but he is also completely amazed that his classmates have protected him—he is finally accepted by all his classmates, except Julian.
• At the end of the school year Auggie finds out that his dad threw away his beloved astronaut helmet. He's outraged, until his dad tells him he missed seeing the face he loves so much.
• At the end of the school year, Auggie wins the Henry Ward Beecher medal for being the student "whose quiet strength has carried up the most hearts" (8.Awards.16). Shmoop and Auggie's mom get totally choked up.
