The Scarecrow Timeline and Summary

  • The Scarecrow is "born" two days before Dorothy encounters him on the road. A farmer made him for his field, and somehow the Scarecrow just came to life.
  • In the field, the Scarecrow scares the crows for about five seconds before they figure out he's a fraud. This makes him feel worthless.
  • Dorothy encounters the Scarecrow in the field, and helps remove him from the pole on which he has been stuck. He decides to accompany her to Oz in hopes of getting a brain.
  • Dorothy and the Scarecrow pick up a few more friends along the way: the Tin Woodman and the Lion. Together, they face many challenges.
  • When crossing a river with a strong current, the Scarecrow gets separated from the group. He's stuck hanging onto a pole in the middle of the river, but then he's rescued by a stork.
  • When the gang walks through a poppy field, all the animals in their group fall asleep. The Scarecrow and the Tin Woodman (who aren't animals) carry Dorothy out of the field, but they leave the heavy Lion behind.
  • The Scarecrow devises a crazy plan for the Lion to be saved by field mice. It works!
  • The Scarecrow and his friends arrive in the Emerald City. On the second day, when the Scarecrow asks Oz for a brain, he's told he must help Dorothy kill the Wicked Witch.
  • The gang leaves for the west. The Scarecrow is attacked by the Winged Monkeys, who rip him to shreds.
  • The Winkies put the Scarecrow back together. He's delighted to learn that the witch is dead.
  • The travelers return to Oz. Even when the Scarecrow learns the Wizard is a fake, he demands a brain.
  • The Scarecrow gets his brain! It's basically made out of junk, but the Scarecrow finally has confidence in himself.
  • On his way out of town, Oz appoints the Scarecrow the new ruler of the Land of Oz.
  • The Scarecrow abandons his throne to accompany Dorothy on her journey to the South. They encounter many obstacles along the way, but eventually they arrive at the good witch's palace.
  • When Dorothy heads back to Oz, the Scarecrow hitches a ride with the Winged Monkeys. He goes back to Oz to rule his new kingdom.
