A rectangular box has a height of 14 inches and a base with dimensions 8 by 12 inches. What is the volume of the box?

On the first read-through of the problem, we learn that there's a rectangular box. To help focus our thoughts, draw a picture of that thing. You're not going to rely on our box, are you? Go ahead, draw your own box. C'mon, it's a blast!

On the second read-through we can fill in some dimensions now that we've exorcised some of our artistic demons.

We know the volume of a box is length times width times height, so we multiply these dimensions together and get 12 × 8 × 14 = 1344 in². Even though we're now done with this problem, we'd appreciate it if you'd hang onto that box for a bit. We're moving next weekend.
