Character Analysis
Fernando Oliveria is an illegal heart surgeon in Brazil. Fernando doesn't get much characterization beyond his pride and a devil-may-care attitude, but, like Nury Televaldi before him, his purpose in the novel is more one of world building.
His story of illegal organs spreading the virus beyond national borders gives the reader one more plausible explanation for the worldwide outbreak to come. Fernando's connections with Brazilian police also provide us with one more example of the government corruptibility and greed.
