The Civil War began on this day in 1861 when Confederate troops, under the direction of General P. G. T. Beauregard, fired on Fort Sumter. The war would drag on for four more years and end hundreds of thousands of lives before ending in a Union victory in the summer of '65. But can we go back and talk about General P. G. T. Beauregard for a second? The only way that name could sound more Confederate general-y would be if the "G" somehow stood for "Dixie." (It actually stood for Gustave.)
