The National Basketball Association was born on this day in 1949 after the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League merged. Many of the league's teams were named through fan contests. One example is the Phoenix Suns. In 1968, GM Jerry Colangelo chose Suns from a gaggle of submissions that included Scorpions, Poobahs, Dudes, Cactus Lovers, and White Wing Doves.
