American inventor Leo Fender was born on this day in 1909. He built the Fender Telecaster and Stratocaster guitars and the Fender Precision bass guitar, three legendary axes that were, pardon the pun, so instrumental to rock 'n' roll music that he was inducted into its Hall of Fame in 1992—even though Fender himself didn't know how to play guitar or bass.
