The Panama Canal opened to traffic on this day in 1914. The idea for it was first proposed in 1524. Plans were made in 1529. …And then nothing happened for about 350 years. A French company started working on it in 1881, the Americans took over in 1904, and they finished it ten years, one landslide, several floods, a few thousand mosquitoes, and close to 270 million cubic yards of dirt later.
