The Wizard of Oz hit movie theaters on this day in 1939. Producer Mervyn LeRoy originally wanted a boy pup to play Dorothy's dog, Toto. Eventually, he cast a female named Terry. She took home $125 a week, while the Munchkin actors were paid just $50 a piece. Judy Garland fell head over heels for her canine co-star and wanted to adopt her, but the dog's owners said "there's no place like our home for Terry."
