dec 01 Learn More Rosa Parks Refuses to Give up Her Seat
Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on a Montgomery, Alabama, bus on this day in 1955, sparking off the historic Montgomery Bus Boycott. It's a myth that she refused to move because her feet were tired. In her autobiography, Parks explained that she was no more tired that day after work than she was any other day. "The only tired I was, was tired of giving in," she wrote (source). Later in life, she grew tired of Outkast using her name in their hit song, "Rosa Parks," and sued the hip-hop duo for defamation. She lost, but in 2005 Outkast paid her an out-of-court settlement anyway.
