Ever wonder who named California? Well, wonder no more. Spanish explorer Hernán Cortés, who was born on this day in 1485, named the state. Cortez was trying to find a route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific Ocean when he hit California. Cortés is better known for conquering the Aztecs. He defeated five million men with just 1,000 troops and returned to Spain a hero. His reputation took a hit a few years later though, when a rumor began circulating that he'd murdered his wife.
