On this day in 1933, a court ruled that James Joyce's Ulysses is not obscene. Phew. The novel has a rabid following. In fact, every year on June 16th, Ulysses fanboys and -girls celebrate Bloomsday, named after the book's main character, Leopold Bloom. Why June 16th? That's the day that everything happens in the book. Why did Joyce choose June 16th? Because June 16, 1904, is when he went on his first date with his wife, Nora. Everybody all together now: Awww.
