dec 10 Learn More Emily Dickinson Born
Poet Emily Dickinson was born on this day in 1830. She never met a dash she didn't like: small ones, long ones, skinny ones, fat ones—Dickinson was mad about dashes. (Maybe not 50-yard ones; she was basically a shut-in.) Nobody's quite sure what all of those dashes are supposed to mean, though. Nobody knows how many poems Dickinson actually wrote, either. Unlike most poets, she wasn't a big fan of publishing, and only foisted a few of her poems onto the populace while she was alive, despite writing over 3,500 poems… that we know of.
