Patty Hearst, the 19-year-old granddaughter of publishing mogul William Randolph Hearst, was abducted by the Symbionese Liberation Army on this day in 1974. Hearst's name has become synonymous with Stockholm Syndrome, which, contrary to popular belief, has nothing to do with shopping at IKEA. Rather, it's what happens when a hostage catches feelings for his or her captors and becomes emotionally attached to them. So maybe it is a little bit like going to IKEA. Mmm, meatballs.
