Film critic and journalist Gene Siskel died on this day in 1999. Ever given a movie an enthusiastic two thumbs up? Siskel popularized the simple "thumbs up, thumbs down" rating system with his partner, and sometimes nemesis, Roger Ebert. The two critics, who reviewed films for rival Chicago newspapers, praised, panned, and generally duked it out over films for almost twenty-five years on TV.
