On this day in 1915, the United States House of Representatives rejected a proposal to give women the right to vote. Women finally got the vote in 1920—four years after Jeanette Rankin was elected to the House of Representatives in Montana. Wait—what? The Constitution may not have federally recognized women's right to vote until 1920, but that didn't prohibit them from holding federal office. Oh, snap.
