President Jimmy Carter pardoned almost all Vietnam War draft resisters on this day in 1977, his second day in office. Human rights groups applauded the bold move; many veterans were outraged. Carter, along with George H.W. Bush, is one of only two presidents since 1932 not to be elected to second term. After checking out of the White House, Carter penned numerous books, taught at Emory University, and established the Carter Center, a non-profit policy center that fights to alleviate human suffering worldwide. Not bad for a dude that started out as a peanut farmer.
