jul 09 Learn More David Hockney Born

Painter David Hockney was born on this day in 1937. The artist has examined a multitude of subjects in his work: everything from his beloved dachshunds, Stanley and Boodgie, to swimming pools—as in paintings of swimming pools, although he also painted a mural on the floor of the swimming pool at the historic Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel. Officials immediately closed the pool because they feared the painting's undulating design would confuse lifeguards. Ultimately, cooler heads prevailed and the pop art pool reopened. Doesn't that make you want to be a painter?
