The Scopes Monkey Trial began on this day in 1925. It put football coach and substitute teacher John Scopes on the hook for teaching evolution. Problem is, Scopes never actually taught evolution. The whole thing was a publicity stunt. And it worked. The high-profile case threw Dayton, Tennessee, and the creationism vs. evolution debate into the national spotlight, and the Scopes story has been adapted for stage and screen time and time again—from the 1960 film Inherit the Wind starring Spencer Tracy to Comedy Central's Drunk History.
