Aaron Burr, the sitting vice-president, killed Alexander Hamilton in a duel on this day in 1804. The two men simply hated each other, and it all went down at the Heights of Weehawken, a popular dueling spot. What made it so popular? Mainly, the fact that it was in New Jersey. New York had recently outlawed gunfights as a legitimate way to settle disputes, so men that wanted to get their duel on had to cross the Hudson to 1-2-3-shoot each other in peace. Sadly, Hamilton's son Philip was bested in a duel at Weehawken just three years before his father met the same dreadful fate.
