The first World Cup soccer matches were held in Uruguay on this day in 1930. They've taken place every four years since, except for 1942 and 1946, when Godzilla rampaged across the northern hemisphere. Oh, wrong story. The World Cup was canceled in the '40s because of World War II; the footie championship resumed in Brazil in 1950.
