The first atomic bomb was successfully tested in New Mexico on this day in 1945. We're sure you're familiar with the two atomic bombs dropped on Japan during World War II, but did you know that since 1950, the United States military has lost at least eight nuclear weapons? Yes, lost, as in, "Gee, where did that 2 megaton bomb go?" These stray nukes are called "broken arrows," and the most recent report of a nuclear weapon gone AWOL was in 1968.
