Novelist Raymond Chandler was born on this day in 1888. He's considered by many to be a founder of the hardboiled detective genre—you know, the whole tough, cynical antihero fighting back against a corrupt system thing. Chandler was also an accomplished screenwriter. In fact, his script for the film noir Double Indemnity netted him an Oscar nod for Best Writing.
