The first woman found to be a witch in the Salem Witch Trials was hanged on this day in 1692. It's a popular misconception that accused witches were burned at the stake. Nobody actually was. But there were a multitude of actions that could lead to one being suspected of witchcraft, including being poor, being rich, having braided hair, touching a pig carcass, being married with a lot of kids, being married with only a couple of kids, possessing spoiled dairy products, having a birthmark or mole, arguing with a female friend, or arguing with any person at all.
