Existentialist philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre was born on this day in 1905. In 1964, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, but turned it down, claiming that a writer should not turn himself into an institution. Other things writers should not turn themselves into include newts, mannequins, and tree stumps.
