Can a bar be a National Historic Landmark? It can if it's part of The Stonewall Inn, a.k.a., the birthplace of the American Gay Rights movement. The Stonewall Riots, a series of largely impromptu demonstrations by members of the LGBT community, started on this day in 1969. Within a few years, gay activist organizations had sprung up in most major American cities.
