On this day in 1933, families across the United States gathered around ye olde radio to hear President Franklin D. Roosevelt give his first "fireside chat." FDR used these chats to speak directly to the American people about pressing issues, and made a point to be as easy-to-understand and accessible as possible. In 2008, President Barack Obama gave a series of "wireside chats" where he talked directly to the public via YouTube. With a strong cellular signal, you could listen to the president explain federal monetary policy from the sidecar of a speeding motorcycle. Now that's accessible.
