Nathaniel Hawthorne's titillating novel The Scarlet Letter was published on this day in 1850. In the book, a woman is forced to wear the letter "A" on her clothes to show that she was an adulteress. Sounds messed up, right? Well, the Puritans really did that. What if somebody removed the letter? They'd be whipped. If we had to wear a letter on all of our clothes, we'd wear "P" for pizza. We've had a love affair with it for decades.
