What do Eminem and writer John Updike—who was born on this day in 1932—have in common? In a word, rabbits. In 8 Mile, Eminem plays Jimmy "Rabbit" Smith, a white, "everyman" antihero who speaks and behaves problematically, and is on the verge of being eaten alive by the diverse, distinctly American culture around him if he doesn't get his act together. That sure sounds a lot like Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom, the main character in Updike's most famous work, the "Rabbit" series. In fact, the screenplay for 8 Mile begins with a quote from Updike's first "Rabbit" novel, Rabbit, Run—which is also the name of the last cut on the 8 Mile soundtrack.
