mar 19 Learn More Operation Iraqi Freedom Begins


Operation Iraqi Freedom began on this day in 2003, roughly a week after Operation Potato Freedom started. Never heard of it? Well, perhaps you've heard of "Freedom" fries. Here's what happened: When the United States announced its intention to intervene in Iraq, it had a hard time finding support. Most of the country's old war buddies, including France, said, "Sorry, I'm out." To really stick it to France, some Americans—including members of the government—renamed French fries Freedom fries. Too bad French fries come from Belgium.
