may 10 Learn More First Transcontinental Railroad Completed


The First Transcontinental Railroad was completed on this day in 1869, finally linking the East and West coasts of America. The last tie was secured to the track with four special spikes: one silver, two gold, and one iron, silver, and gold combo spike. Everybody totally dug the pageantry. Then those special spikes were quietly dug up, and a railroad worker pounded the tie back on with regular ol' iron spikes—and significantly less pomp and circumstance.
