Alabama governor and flip-flopping segregationist George Wallace was shot five times while campaigning for president on this day in 1972. Wallace, who survived the attack but remained paralyzed from the waist down, was running as a Democrat. Four years earlier, he ran as an Independent and considered Colonel Harland Sanders for his running mate. That's right: the Colonel Sanders, of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame. We guess that's one way to guarantee a chicken in every pot.
