The Brooklyn Bridge opened on this day in 1883. The part cable-stayed, part suspension bridge, which connects Brooklyn to Manhattan, was originally called The New York and Brooklyn Bridge. Or, sometimes, the East River Bridge, since it crosses—yup—the East River. It unofficially became the Brooklyn Bridge thanks to an 1867 letter to the editor in the Brooklyn Daily Eagle. The city finally made it official a mere 48 years later in 1915.
