What do Dracula and Jefferson Davis have in common? In a word, Transylvania. The Romanian region is the birthplace of the notoriously bloodthirsty count, while Davis, who was elected President of the Confederate States of America on this day in 1861, is arguably the most famous alumnus of Kentucky's Transylvania University. What does Kentucky have to do with Romania? Trees, mainly. "Transylvania" is Latin for "across the woods."
