French writer and philosopher Albert Camus was born on this day in 1913. The Nobel Prize-winning novelist was a mega soccer fan. In fact, he played goalie for the University of Algiers until he was sidelined, permanently, by tuberculosis. Why goalie? It kept his shoes in good shape, and that kept his grandma off his back. She would regularly check Camus' shoes for wear and tear, and if they were too roughed up, she'd rough him up—not exactly Grand-mère of the Year material.
