Ferdinand and Isabella were married on this day in 1469, unifying Spain. Ten years later, their daughter Joanna the Mad was born. She wasn't mad from birth, of course, but she sure was by the end of her life. After her husband, King Philip the Handsome, died, she refused to bury him for three years and would regularly open his coffin to check on him and give him a smooch or two. And this, dear Shmooper, is why cousins shouldn't marry.
