General Charles Cornwallis—er, excuse us, His Excellency the Most Honourable General the Marquess Cornwallis—surrendered at Yorktown on this day in 1781. It effectively ended the Revolutionary War in America, although a few more battles raged on at sea before a peace treaty was signed. Cornwallis didn't show up for the formal surrender ceremony, though. He said he was sick. Sure, buddy.
