On this day in 2001, President George W. Bush signed the USA Patriot Act. You probably already know that it's designed to prevent and punish terrorism. You probably also know that it's been the source of tons of controversy because it compromises civil liberties. But did you know that its name is a backronym—a.k.a. an acronym created to fit an existing word? Yup—USA Patriot stands for Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism. Catchy.
