Literary lovebirds Elizabeth Barrett and Robert Browning eloped on this day in 1846. In fact, their entire courtship was kept secret; they feared that Barrett's dad, who was a pretty intimidating dude, wouldn't approve. And they were right: Barrett's father disowned the poet after she got married, just as he'd disowned all of her siblings once they were wed. We suppose that's one blunt way to encourage your children's independence; personally, we've always been partial to turning their childhood bedroom into a home gym.
