John Steinbeck won the Medal of Freedom on this day in 1964. You've probably heard of his most famous work, the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel The Grapes of Wrath—although, if you're Japanese, you might know it better as The Angry Raisins. At least that's what one Japanese bookshop owner called it when a customer inquired. That customer? Steinbeck's widow, Elaine.
