University of Arkansas

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Football, football, and more football. Did I say football? Oh…well then. Also, basketball.

  • Greek life. One in every four of my students is in a fraternity or sorority.

  • B(usiness)-school. Sam Walton represent, yo. Where better to learn about business than at a school affiliated with one of the most successful businesses in the world?

  • Literature and education. Fulbright College is nearly as prestigious as my Walton Business School.

  • Working out your calves. If you bring a bike, you're going to want as many gears as possible. We've got some killer hills.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. Fayettechill attire. Think Chubbies shorts and a Polo.

  2. Scooter. They. Are. Everywhere.

  3. Hammock. Don't forget to take it easy once in a while.

  4. Razorback swag. Sports are important here, and I like to see that school spirit.

  5. Razorbucks. Don't even try to go anywhere without your student ID. Razorbucks are accepted all over campus and using them totally beats depleting your personal finances.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • Bill and Hillary Clinton. Not to name-drop, but they were both professors here.

  • Walmart. It started in Bentonville, half an hour away. Go to the Walton School of Business by day and walk down the street to see a touring Broadway show at the Walton Arts Center by night. There are a lot of Wal-somethings around here.

  • The Razorbacks. We're a little obsessed with the SEC around here.

  • The Fulbright Scholarship Program. It was created by J. William Fulbright, a graduate and former president of the university.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

I'm probably somewhere on Dickson Street. Step out of the classroom (or take down your hammock from the trees around the Greek Theatre), and you're right on the main drag of Fayetteville nightlife. Don't feel like seeing a band at George's Majestic Lounge or browsing through literary treasures at the Dickson Street Bookshop? Just keep strolling. There's always plenty to do on Dickson on the weekends.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • The Student Union

  • Greek Theatre

  • Brough Commons (the old-school dining hall)

  • The Quad and Peace Fountain

  • We're big on food here. Students also tend to spend a lot of time in:
    • Qdoba and Chipotle

    • Hammontree's for amazing grilled cheese sandwiches

    • Hugo's or Deluxe Burger

    • Rick's Bakery

    • Arsaga's for some awesome coffee

Quirks:

  • Parking and Transit is a force to be reckoned with. You're pretty much guaranteed a ticket within one minute of a parking violation, and you can't graduate if you owe them money.

  • The College of Arts and Sciences gives whole letters only. You'll get an A, B, C, D, or F. Don't be lookin' for no pluses and minuses from me.

  • All students have to go through a formal exit exam and interview affiliated with the student's major. I don't let anyone slink out unnoticed.

  • And of course, every U of A student has made out with somebody beneath the blue cross on Mt. Sequoyah at least once. It's tradition.

Famous Alumni:

  • John Daly, a professional golfer.

  • Jerry Jones, owner of the Dallas Cowboys.

  • S. Robson Walton, chairman at Walmart and son of the founder.

  • Sarah Caldwell, an opera conductor.

  • Wilma Mankiller, first female chief of the Cherokee Nation.
