The University of Findlay
Hallmarks and Quirks
Things I'm Good At:
- I'm going to say it a lot, not because I like it but because it's always the first thing people notice: I'm really pretty. Okay, maybe I also like saying it.
- Equestrian Studies. Don't believe me? Here's some proof.
- Science majors are definitely my beaker of tea. I'm not choosy though, I also love business and agriculture majors.
- I'm friendly and relaxed. My professors will work with your schedule instead of leaving you helpless and alone on your last major paper of the semester. You won't have to pull your hair out here.
My Top 5 Must-Haves:
- Two words: Findlay swag. You can grab all sorts of Findlay gear from the UF bookstore or Oiler Mart, but the best part of any college experience is the free memorabilia, There's no shortage of free stuff during campus events. Eventually, you'll get to the point where you won't have to do laundry because you'll have so many free tee shirts.
- Ohio is very touchy about its weather. You're going to need a weather app at all times, because it can go from seventy degrees and sunny to fifty degrees and rainy in a snap.
- A Club. No, not to defend yourself with, I'm talking about the extracurricular sort. Whether you've been a dancer all your life or enjoy playing CoD with your friends, I can set you up with a group you'll love to pieces.
- Transportation. Unless you want to be stuck eating dining hall food until the end of the semester (which you won't want to do after about three weeks in), you'll need something to get you to other restaurants in Findlay.
- Peanuts for the squirrels. This may sound weird, but we love our on-campus squirrels and they're super friendly.
Why You Might Have Heard of Me:
- You may have heard that I was ranked One of the Best in the Midwest colleges. I wasn't ranked number one, but hey, a college can dream.
- Not that I'm vain or anything, but I've been praised numerous times for my good looks. America in Bloom even took notice, giving me two awards for my appearance.
On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...
People from Ohio are foodies, and my students are no exception. On the weekends, I skip the dining hall grub and head out to find food that knocks my socks off. Thankfully, we have so many choices here in Findlay, it's not hard to find a favorite place or try something new.
If I'm not grabbing food that's most likely bad for me, I'm socializing in the dorms and in upperclassman houses. Some students go out and party, some stay in for movie nights. No matter your party style, you'll be able to find some like-minded friends here.
Favorite Hangouts:
- It's a good thing I'm abundant in the coffee department, because I know college students basically need it to function. My on-campus coffee spot and hangout, The Cave, lets you get some downtime between classes and grab some caffeine at Jazzman's Cafe and Bakery.
- If The Cave can't curb your caffeine fix, right across the street is George House. They're filled with bakery goodies and specialty coffees galore.
- My on-campus dining hall, Henderson (or Hendo, as everyone calls it), offers tons of choices and changes menus every day. Feeling burgers one day and rotisserie chicken the next? I got you, bro.
- A Findlay favorite is the Main Street Deli on, you guessed it, Main Street. They have the best sandwiches to grab when you can't stand Hendo food anymore and need something cheap.
Quirks:
- I'm really superstitious, especially about freshman and seniors. When you come in as a freshman, you have to walk through the Griffith Memorial Arch at the front of the campus during the Arch Ceremony. Then when you graduate as a senior, you jump back through. Without both ceremonies as a freshman and senior, it's said your career will not succeed. Spooky to the max, I know.
- Along with the whole superstitious theme, don't step on the red dots that circle the Oil Derrick Fountain. It's like the whole "step on a crack, break your mother's back," but instead, the crack is a dot and your mother's back are your grades.
- I love my campus slang. You'll hear all kinds of different jargon describing different buildings around campus. For example, you might hear "G FAP," which is a shortened version of the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion. Trust me, if you don't know the shortened versions of building names, you're gonna have a bad time when trying to figure out what buildings your classes are in.
