Ants alive! It's time for your daily dose of shmoop...

00:08

Put your eyeballs on this passage and accompanying diagrams.

00:11

Hit pause first, 'cause it's gonna go away pretty quick...

00:26

So... what was the purpose of this experiment?

00:28

And here are the potential answers...

00:34

Ants. Ugh. Filthy little creatures. Always climbing all over your PB&J sandwich and getting

00:39

into the crevices of your cherry pie.

00:42

So why have some scientists spent some of their valuable time messing around with these pests?

00:47

What's the purpose?

00:50

Let's start by looking at the data collected.

00:52

What does the graph show? Well, it shows the percent of transported leaves.

00:58

What does that mean though? Well, to find out, we have to take a look at the apparatus.

01:02

Why is the experiment set up like this? Other than because the scientists are sadists who

01:07

enjoy watching ants fall from great heights.

01:10

But falling ants aside, the apparatus is set up so that the ants are forced to get back home...

01:16

...with the transported leaves, from a different path... without pheromones.

01:20

So... can they do it?

01:22

The graph shows that the ants did get the leaves back to their home, so since we know

01:26

that the leaves didn't transport themselves,

01:28

the ants must have figured out how to get back.

01:31

We already know our answer.

01:33

Option A says that the purpose of the experiment is to determine if ants can learn to return

01:38

to their nest by a different route.

01:41

And what do you know? We not only figured out that yes, the experiment was set up to

01:45

see if the ants can return...

01:47

...but we also figured out that they can get back.

01:50

Our answer is A.

01:51

What a touching homecoming. Maybe he'll get a parade.
