Hope you left room for an extra helping of shmoop…

00:06

Before heading home from work, Martha needed to get gas for her car and then buy some masquerade masks.

00:11

Don’t ask.

00:12

She ended up purchasing 12 gallons of fuel for her car at $3.99 per gallon.

00:16

If masks cost $4.40 for a 10-pack… hey, it’s always nice to have extra…

00:21

…how many masks was she able to purchase if she had a total of $70 to spend?

00:26

And here are the potential answers…

00:32

So if we quickly glance at the answers, none of them have cents – so they are all rounded up;

00:37

We have 12 gallons at 3.99, or 4 bucks a gallon after being rounded… or 48 bucks total spent on gas.

00:45

She had a total of 70 bucks to spend… which means she has 22 left.

00:49

So now we just have to divide 4.40 into 22 to get the number of masks she could afford

00:55

– and remember there are 10 to a pack.

00:57

So 4.40 goes into 22 five times evenly. With 10 masks in a pack, we get 50 masks

01:04

for the money remaining after the gas gouging.

01:06

Our answer is D.

01:08

As in, “Disguise.”
