Description:

We’re not saying you should be a cocky jerk, but we are saying you should take pride in your accomplishments. For instance, once we drew a hand turkey. We’re still bragging about that one.

Self-Pride a la Shmoop [image of an apple kept on a book]

00:06

All right, here's the deal.

00:07

We're not all Michael Phelps.

00:08

In fact, most of us aren't. Hmm.

00:11

As much as our mothers might wish we had

00:12

22-going-on-however-many Olympic medals,

00:15

well, she more likely got this instead. [Phelps dressed in a suit standing by a pool]

00:19

What a heroic effort.

00:20

It's easy to look at people like Phelps or

00:22

J. K. Rowling or Stephen Hawking or whoever

00:25

and be envious of their accomplishments.

00:27

It's even easier to look at people around us [image of a ground with grass]

00:29

and wonder why we're not on par with them.

00:32

Ever scroll through Facebook and see their statuses

00:35

about how happy your friends are

00:37

with their new job and their new significant other [someone checking Facebook status]

00:40

or their killer tan they got on the trip to Cancun?

00:43

Well, and then you check out your page,

00:45

which is essentially a love letter to your cat,

00:47

pizza, and sleeping.

00:48

Well, news flash.

00:49

Just because you're not sun bathing on the beaches of Cancun [a man enjoying at a beach]

00:52

doesn't mean you're not doing some cool things.

00:55

You don't have to have 22 Olympic gold medals.

00:57

But you did set your school's butterfly record in your last meet.

01:00

Maybe you didn't write seven world famous books,

01:03

but you do like to write for fun. [woman reading a story book to a small girl]

01:05

And your little sister who used to have nightmares

01:06

all the time? Well, ever since you started reading

01:08

your stories to her, they've gone away.

01:10

And maybe you're not gonna make your living as a renowned

01:13

theoretical physicist, but that B+ you got on your physics test?

01:16

Well, you earned it and you're pretty proud of it [a teacher talking to a student in a classroom]

01:18

and, for you, that was a great grade.

01:20

Getting down on yourself is easy,

01:22

especially when it seems like everyone around you

01:24

has their life figured out. [someone scrolling through Facebook]

01:26

Here's a secret: No one ever has it all figured out.

01:31

Even Phelps is always pushing to be better

01:33

and shave off a half-second or two.

01:35

And we only get to hear about the good stuff he does.

01:37

He probably sucks in a million other ways. [Phelps talking to someone on a phone]

01:39

Well, keep in mind there's a fine line

01:41

between being a cocky, arrogant jerk

01:43

and a sniveling mess in need of

01:45

constant reassurance.

01:47

So how much pride should you take in your work? [image of a speedometer]

01:49

Well, let's look at this girl.

01:50

She got the lead in her play.

01:52

She worked hard and delivered a great performance.

01:54

You tell her she was fabulous and she replies like this:

01:59

Charming. [someone giving a bouquet of red roses to a woman]

02:00

She also tells you she's been encouraged to audition

02:02

for Juilliard and she feels like she's destined to get in.

02:05

After all, have you seen what passes for talent these days?

02:08

Blegh. Too much pride isn't pretty.

02:10

It's braggy and arrogant. [a gorilla outside a window]

02:12

But say you go up to her after the play

02:14

and tell her she was fabulous and she replies like this:

02:18

You spend the rest of the night assuring her

02:20

that, contrary to her belief,

02:21

Meryl Streep has not had bowel movements

02:23

with more talent than her.

02:24

So a complete lack of pride isn't pretty, either. [Meryl Streep giving a thumbs up]

02:27

But let's say you tell her she was fabulous

02:29

and she replies like this:

02:32

There it is.

02:32

The sweet spot.

02:34

She recognizes what she accomplished,

02:36

takes pride in it, but stays humble. Nice. [woman exiting the stage]

02:39

Bottom line is that you can beat yourself up

02:41

all you want over not being Michael Phelps.

02:43

But chances are, you've got something else to be proud of

02:46

and you're probably the best at being you. [a man scoring a goal]

02:48

You might not make the front of a Wheaties box,

02:50

but it might very well make the door of your parents' refrigerator.

02:53

And eventually, you'll find someone you love

02:55

who loves you back. [picture of a couples wedding]

02:56

And then life's really good.

02:59

[whoosh]
