Here’s your shmoop du jour, brought to you by pizza.

00:06

We promise you’ll solve this problem in 30 minutes or less, or it’s free!

00:11

Sean is dividing a pizza among 7 friends and himself.

00:15

He cuts the pizza so that each slice has a center angle of 40°.

00:20

If everyone gets one slice, how many are left over?

00:24

Here are the potential answers...

00:27

Our first thought is that this is one lazy pizza place, that didn’t bother to slice its pizza before delivering it.

00:33

Anyway, since Sean does have to take it upon himself to slice said pizza…

00:37

…he decides to get funky with it and cut 40 degree slices.

00:41

Okay, so…what does that mean for our pizza as a whole?

00:44

We’re dealing with a circle, so we know we’ve got 360 degrees in our entire pie.

00:49

If each slice is 40 degrees, then looks like we have 360 divided by 40… or 9…total slices.

00:57

So there are 8 total friends, and 9 total slices.

01:01

Once everyone has had a slice, there will be exactly one slice leftover. So the answer is B.

01:07

And we do not want to be around to witness the fiasco that is sure to follow…
