Character Role Analysis

Esther Greenwood

Esther is both the narrator and the main character of The Bell Jar. The novel's trajectory follows Esther from crisis to crisis, culminating in her attempted suicide. While the naiveté of some of Esther's views, particularly with regard to sex, are obvious, the novel is generally sympathetic to her criticism of social norms, particularly with regard to women and femininity.
