Kansas-Nebraska Act: The Grand Finale (Section 37) Summary

Ever Wondered What an 1850s Mic Drop Looks Like?

  • As far as earth-shattering, paradigm-shifting, cliff-hanging endings go, this may or may not make our top ten, but Section 37 is special in that it is the only section of this Act written to apply to both the Territory of Nebraska and the Territory of Kansas.
  • That's right: even though the verbiage of the other 36 sections is nearly identical between the two Territories, this section stands alone and is addressed to both. So what does it say? It says…drumroll, please…
  • Any outside treaties, etc. between the U.S. Government and Indian tribes in Kansas and Nebraska will not be affected by this Act, though the POTUS reserves the right to change the office location of superintendents.
  • Mic, consider yourself dropped.
  • …And then picked back up again for one brief second to let us know that this Act was approved on May 30, 1854.
  • Boom.
